The hotel Florita, built in 1888 is the only one of the 19th century houses that is still in use after the earthquake. Located on the rue du Commerce, one block from the ocean, it is a step back in time with the exception of modern plumbing, it has not been changed in any significant way since it was built. It is furnished with period furniture. Art is everywhere -- in the halls, the bar, the rooms. Jacmel is only 2 hours from Port au Prince but is in another world. It is the prettiest and most peaceful and romantic town in Haiti -- the center of craft and Carnival. There are no factories and no pollution -- on a clear night there are a million stars in the sky. You can walk anywhere without worry, there are things to see along every winding street, it is the only town in Haiti to still have some of its original charm. The Florita is the ONLY hotel in Jacmel. Their are a few rooming houses that accept guests -- but they are not hotels. There are a few hotels on the road out of town but it is necessary to drive to get to Jacmel. And one of the pleasures of Jacmel is to be able to walk at night. Jacmel is also the friendliest town in Haiti and has almost no crime. We are rated the #1 hotel in all of Haiti on Trip Advisor. And please read the review in the post-earthquake edition of Lonely Planet. We are often full (three rooms are still being rebuilt) and a reservation is a good idea. The Canadian expat hosts and their pet Labrador dogs welcome guests to enjoy this family run bed and breakfast with ample space to entertain and sleep up to six guests. Wake up early to witness the gorgeous sunrise over the lagoon filled with different colored catamarans (fishing boats) returning from the daily local catch. There are also plenty of birdlife competing with the fishermen. The views from the bedrooms, balcony and kitchen are all breathtaking – most of the areas of the property overlook the lagoon. Some popular activities that can be arranged for guests include kayaking, stand up paddle boarding (SUP) or taking a boat tour on the lagoon, through the mangroves and along the canals. You can hop across the road to watch the sunset by the beach and return to the villa to spend the entire evening watching the star lit sky reflecting the lagoon. The villa has many lounge areas, a full bar, dining room and large eat-in kitchen all with different seating arrangements aimed at entertaining – ample space to chill out depending on your mood.
